Flash began as Macromedia Director (Shockwave) which was mainly used for making desktop programs. Then it developed into Flash for developing lighter programs and rich media for the web

• 2003 to 2006: Actionscript 2 (Flash MX 2004)
• 2006 to Today: Transition from Actionscript 2 to Actionscript 3 (Flash Player 9)

Difference between AS2 and AS3:

• AS3 is ten times faster
• Object-oriented programming
• AS3 is necessary to do all the new 3D/Augmented Reality stuff (Papervision, Away3D, FLARkit, etc)
• But AS3 is also a lot stricter than AS2
