i thought the etymology of obscene would have something to do with the word “scene”; thinking of sade’s pornographic tableaux and supervert’s extraterrestial sex fetish systematically tabulating the many different combinations of erotic algebra (each one an elaborate pornographic tableaux vivant). but actually “obscene” simply comes from the latin word “obscenus” or obscaen which comes from a combination of the prefix ob (against; facing) and caenum (filth, dirt, unclean).

looking at pictures of nymphs and satyrs, it suddenly dawns upon me that ninfa is espanol for nymph. now it makes sense why mercury de sade names the teenage girls (whom he converts into a outwardly semblance of being an alien before debasing) by the names ninfa 1, ninfa 2, ninfa 3, ninfa 4… ironically (or aptly) the word originally made me think of something more modern. alienating. technological. shiny and plastic. funny how i accrue wrong images to foreign language words. i think i could not get over the first three letters: NIN. in my head all i could see was the glossy nine inch nails sticker i used to have on my wall.
